A new series designed to champion the unique potential of the solo performer and challenge artists to craft ambitious explorations of the specific and intimate relationship between individual performer and spectator.
The Solo Series is designed to present early, never-before-seen inception work to audiences for the first time, with the aim of testing the boundaries of solo performance and exploring new artistic territory. Pieces selected for the Solo Series are typically highly experimental, combustible, pliable work that will utilize a limited showing to outside eyes as a catalyst for future development.
Selected artists receive one or two nights of performances in our intimate white box Gallery space, for audiences of no more than 20 people.
Solo Series works should be:
-No more than 60 minutes in length
-Never before performed (or being substantially reconfigured from a previous performance)
-One-person show with minimal technical requirements
To be considered for the Solo Series, please email Program Director Jolene Noelle at firstname.lastname@example.org with a description of your piece, where it is in your development process, and a short explanation of your goals with the Solo Series. Pieces are selected as time and resources allow. If we aren’t presently able to present your work, we will gladly retain your information for future consideration.
THE SOLO SERIES AT THEATELAB
Gabrielle presented the first version of her newest piece, The Audit, in our Gallery space on September 15 & 16, 2017.
The Audit explores the personal narratives implied by digital data, taking the intangible records of our technological lives and making it an urgent, public event. This solo performance takes a bold leap into a future in which nothing is left to the imagination and everything can be quantified.

Our first experiment in the series, the SOLO SUNDAY SHOWCASE was held Sunday, August 7, 2016 and featured a variety of talented solo artists.
A PANEL DISCUSSION on “Traveling Solo: Touring Solo Shows Domestically and Abroad” was held Sunday, October 2nd, 2016.
More About the Solo Series:
Theaterlab’s white box spaces are particularly vibrant and reflective spaces that are uniquely responsive to the actor, reflecting and resonating even the most nuanced work. Our first project at our previous home on 14th street was a solo performance workshop and we have maintained an evolving interest in solo work through the years. Recently, our Theater was home to Merry Conway’s silent one-person show, Into the Strenuous Briefness.: A Performance Poem Digesting Life.
The Solo Series were created as an extension of Theaterlab’s ongoing interest in solo work, developed through years of hosting artists, companies, and training programs dedicated to solo performance. We find that solo performance is uniquely suited to responding to cultural questions about personal identity and the individual’s relationship to the collective whole. As the zeitgeist continues to shift toward investigations of the line between the self and the communal, we have created a program that is intended to respond to those investigations through rigorous artistic exploration. The Solo Series is an ongoing, malleable series that will grow and adapt to meet the specific needs of the artists as they relate to the audience and to Theaterlab.
