White Canvas: Theaterlab’s Artist-in- Residence Program
The Artist-in- Residence Program at Theaterlab is designed to provide meaningful time for early- to mid-career directors, choreographers, dramaturgs, writers, curators, performance artists, and sound artists to explore the idea of the white canvas. During the six-month residency, Artists-in- Residence are encouraged to lay down artistic roots at Theaterlab by maintaining active engagement with our spaces, our productions, and our staff.
Artists-in- Residence are mentored by Theaterlab’s artistic staff, including Artistic Director Orietta Crispino. They are given time to collaborate with one another and engage with Theaterlab’s visiting artists. At the end of the White Canvas Residency, Artists-in-Residence will present a showing of the work they have created for one of our three white box spaces. White Canvas showings are encouraged to embrace the geometry of space in innovative ways, to construct surprising new environments, and to explore new performative languages. Our white boxes are particularly stark, vibrant, and reflective places for artists to dream up new work and explore their own artistic identities.
Theaterlab seeks out artists whose work is in line with our mission to support experimental, international, and formally ambitious work or work that challenges established perceptions of classical pieces. Currently, all Artists-in- Residence are selected through invited submissions. To learn more, please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
